The Hard Edges of Metal, with support by Charlotte Keeffe

This is part of a short tour launching a new all-brass improvising trio - The Hard Edges of Metal. Support comes in the form of solo trumpet improvised sets by London-based trumpeter Charlotte Keeffe.

From rasping dissonance through mysterious melancholy to sweet sonority, the Hard Edges of Metal bring decades of improvising experience to this intriguing trio. Band members have performed with Keith Tippett, Louis Moholo, John Stevens, Paul Rutherford, Paul Jolly, Annie Whitehead, Sylvia Hallett and Clive Bell to name but a few.

Part of a loose collective of Norfolk-based musicians performing together in many ensembles Chris Dowding (trumpet), Dave Amis (trombone) and Ben Higham (tuba) celebrate texture and emotion with spontaneity and creativity. (The Birdcage, 8pm, £5)

Naviar Records Haiku Live

Following our first event in London last November, the second edition of the Naviar Haiku Fest will take place in Norwich (UK) on Friday 25th May at The Birdcage. We’ll host a haiku workshop in the afternoon, during which participants will have the chance to learn the basics of this traditional form of Japanese poetry, including its history and rules. They’ll also be encouraged to write their own poems and share them with the rest of the group.

In the evening four artists, members of Naviar’s community working in the field of electronic, ambient and electroacoustic music will be performing live.

The event is curated by Naviar Records and Neil Stringfellow, and supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation

Live Performances: 7-11 pm @ The Birdcage – entry £5

Audio Obscura (UK) https://soundcloud.com/audio-obscura-music

Audio Obscura performs Lap-top based electronics for the ears, haunting the wide spectrum’s of electro-acoustic music with a firm footing in the ambient realm. The sound also strays towards the experimental; musique concrète, idm with post-classical minimal leanings occasionally push through.

Ikjoyce (UK) https://soundcloud.com/ikjoyce

ikjoyce makes electronic ambient and drone music using modular synthesis to explore themes of nature, space, isolation, man/machine interaction, and the borders of the sleep/wake cycle.

Sevenism (UK) https://soundcloud.com/sevenism

“I’m a self taught musician and sound mangler blurring the boundaries between analog and digital, acoustic and electronic, generative and human. I work in the present moment letting the music flow wherever it wants. My aim is to make music that is strange and experimental yet resonates on a deeper level.”

Subespai (AUS) https://soundcloud.com/subespai

Subespai is the solo project of Mauri Edo, a Sydney musician born in Barcelona. Walking the line between ambient, noise and drone music, Subespai paints experimental soundscapes by mixing acoustic and electronic audio sources with effect pedals, field recordings and other gadgets.

NNF Byron Vincent: INSTAGRAMMING THE APOCALYPSE

‘WTF is going on? I mean seriously? We’re a nation divided. Our heroes are dropping like barbiturate-riddled flies. Our youth hate themselves so much they exist through digitally manipulated avatars. It’s hard not to feel like the end is nigh and that our positive efforts are mere farts in the ether.’

Byron Vincent was raised to believe that cynicism is cool, modern life is rubbish and that sincerity is for suckers; but as a drowning world punches a solitary fist through an ocean of plastic forks, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate that perspective. In a post-satire age, what’s so funny about peace love and understanding?

This is a scratch show – experience an unfinished show and offer ideas and feedback to the artist.

‘Byron Vincent plays with language like it lives, he has the ability to stretch words almost to breaking point then snap them back to meaning like nothing ever happened. He tells funny hard poems about things that are true’ Kate Tempest

Tickets: £3

Essential companions: Any audience member requiring an essential carer/companion can get one free ticket. Relevant discounts or concessions still apply to the paid ticket.

There’s only one more Altered Feast left before we take our summer break.
This is that.
The last one.
For a bit anyway.
Until the autumn or something.
But don’t risk it.
Just come to this one yeah?

In order to send us off with in style, we have two preview outings of full length solo shows from two of the best musical comedy performers on the circuit.

The headline show will be:

SOOZ KEMPNER - “SUPER SONIC 90s KID”

Award-winning comic Sooz Kempner (Musical Comedy Awards Best Newcomer, Funny Women Awards Variety Award Winner) spent the 90s playing Sonic, going from little kid to fully-grown teen. But what on earth were the 90s all about? Did they map out the rest of Sooz's existence? And will she coast through life or complete it with all the Chaos Emeralds?

Dan combines guitar, looping, beatbox and dynamic visuals in this work-in-progress of Futureproof, his second solo show.
Often seen with hip-hop freestylers Abandoman, YouTube sketch and improv group The RH Experience, and the house band for multi-festival sellout show Amusical.
